Stogumber v Temple Cloud 1st XI, 7th May 2011

Stogumber were always struggling against the Temple attack to finish with 157. Milky came up with the first "5 for" of the season.

Temple knocked off the runs through Bear (49), Jamer (37*) and M Lumbo (27*)

Temple Cloud 1st XI v Purnells, 14th May 2011

Purnells were 90 for 6, thereafter Temple were rubbish and Purnells got 245 for 7. Fielding practise needed!!

Alex got 53, Bear got 106, M Lumbo 30 not out, Stef 25 not out. result!

Ashbrittle v Temple Cloud 1st XI, 21st May 2011

The Temple total was built around 50 from Alex and 81 from Bear. Ashbrittle started badly, recovered, slipped and then recovered again winning off the 4th ball of the final over. Bear admitted to getting the bowling wrong with Mo going for 79 off 11. Not a good result.

Temple Cloud 1st XI v North Petherton, 28th May 2011

North Petherton got off to a flyer but then Temple started to haul themselves back into the game. A late spurt took the visitors to 231 at the end of the 45 overs.

The Temple response started badly with Tom out second ball and Bear and Jaymer following soon after. Alex (34) and Bellie (35) rebuilt and some sort of contest was looking on the cards. However these two got out in quick succession and thereafter Temple were always behind the rate in spite of a spirited 40 from Odd and a cultured 18* from Podgy.

Watchet v Temple Cloud 1st XI, 4th June 2011

On a somewhat variable wicket Watchet made little headway against the Temple attack. Simon caused all sorts of bother without getting the proper reward while Mo (3 for 13) and Bear (4 for 22) picked up the wickets.

Sheps went second ball - openers getting out second ball is becoming a bit of a theme. Thereafter Alex (30), Bear (24) and Bellie (36) saw Temple home without too many alarms.

If you have to go all the way to Watchet it is good to come home with a win.

Wellington v Temple Cloud 1st XI, 11th June 2011

Least said, soonest mended. Temple batted first on a challenging wicket and were all out for 82 with only Bellie passing 20. Wellington knocked off the runs slowly but successfully.

Temple Cloud 1st XI vStaplegrove, 18th June 2011

The covers proved their worth at the end of a wet week. The match started late to allow old wickets to dry out with an agreed 40 overs a side. Sheps (55) gave the Temple innings some early momentum and this was followed by a period of very tight cricket as Staplegrove bowled and fielded exceptionally well. Jamer (40), Stef (39) and Lumbo (48) all made significant contributions and with a late flourish Temple closed on 221.

Staplegrove set the basis of their win with a large opening partnership and judged the run chase to perfection hitting the winning run off the 4th ball of the last over.

Belvedere v Temple Cloud 1st XI, 25th June 2011

This was a good toss for the Bear to win on his return to the side after injury. Belvedere struggled against Milky (12-6-13-2) and Mo (12-5-33-3) and then Sheps got in on the act (3-0-15-4).

Temple's reply was built round a solid knock from Alex (20), while Bear (37) and Bellie (23) played a few shots.

Temple Cloud 1st XI v North Perrott, 2nd July 2011

Temple batted first and after the early loss of Alex, Sheps (70) and The Bear (44) set the stage for the rest of the batting to build a big score. Extras chipped in to the tune of 62 free runs. Avi on his home debut had the shortest of visits to the wicket!

North Perrott were never in the hunt. Most of Temple's bowlers had a go and most picked up a wicket or two.

At the half-way point of the season Temple are third and with just a little more luck in the second half of the year might yet challenge the teams above them.

Temple Cloud 1st XI v Stogumber, 9th July 2011

The Stogumber batsmen were initially held in check by very tight bowling from Milky and Mo. At the half-way point of the innings less then 50 runs were on the board but with only one wicket down. The introduction of the change bowlers got things moving and the visitors ended up on 228-8 with D Barnes contributing 71.

The Temple innings got off to a reasonable start with the first three batsmen all getting into the 20s ... but they then got themselves out. Mark with 56 kept Temple in the game. With three balls left Temple needed four to win with the last pair at the wicket ... and that was as close as it got; Temple fell 4 short.

Temple Cloud 1st XI v Ashbrittle, 23rd July 2011

Temple batted first and were in all sorts if disarray before Milky (59) and Tom (32) put together the only substantial stand if the innings. Temple closed on 191, not as many as they would have liked but far more than looked possible at one point.

The Ashbrittle reply was based on a solid opening stand of over 100. Thereafter Temple chipped away but not quickly enough to stop Ashbrittle running out winners by 3 wickets.

North Petherton v Temple Cloud 1st XI, 30th July 2011

North Petherton batted first and Temple bowled and fielded exceptionally well to restrict the home side to 180-9 off the 45 overs. Bear chipped in with a short spell claiming 3 for 15.

After tea everything went pear-shaped. Only the Bear passed 20 and Temple could only manage 106.

Temple Cloud 1st XI v Watchet, 6th August 2011

The batting functioned far better this week with Jamer (68), Bear (58) and Bellie (59) all making substantial contributions to the total of 236 for 6.

The Watchet reply was successful then stuttered then picked up again and in the end almost made it to the winning score. However just for once Temple won a tight game and picked up a full 35 points to leave them mid table.

Temple Cloud 1st XI v Wellington, 13th August 2011

Wellington batted first and could make no headway against Milky (3 for 19) and Mo (3 for 25). At one point six wickets were down for around 50 but a late order recovery saw the Wellington innings close on 185 for 8.

When Temple batted Jamer went relatively early but then Sheps (42) and Lumbo (64) took the game away from Wellington before The Bear (60*) came in and took the team to victory.

Staplegrove v Temple Cloud 1st XI, 20th August 2011

There was an air of ‘why bother’ in the Temple trip to Staplegrove and this certainly showed through in the performance. Batting first Temple lost three quick wickets and after that it was always going to be an uphill struggle against the league leaders. Bear with 39 was top score in an innings that closed on 157.

Staplegrove chased down this total for the loss of only one wicket – to Tom Iles!

Temple Cloud 1st XI v Belvedere, 27th August 2011

Temple batted first and ground out a total of 201. Eight batsmen reached double figures but none went on to play a major innings Sheps with 35 was top score.

When Belvedere batted they had no answer to Milky who finished with figures of 12-5-19-8 with what Bear describes as “the best I’ve ever seen him bowl”. The visitors could only manage 84 of which 31 were extras!

North Perrott v Temple Cloud 1st XI, 3rd September 2011

This was almost the Simon Curtis one-man show.

North Perrott batted first and for the second week running Simon claimed 8 wickets this time at the cost of 37 runs. The only other bowler to take a wicket was Stef. The rest of the attack were tight but nobody could claim the final wicket.

The Temple response faltered a little with a couple of wickets going early on but Jamer (53*) held firm and when the fourth wicket fell Simon joined him and added 54* to the eight wickets he took earlier. Temple romped home in just over 30 overs.

Temple finished 5th, a creditable performance with a strong second half to the season keeping the team well away from the relegation places but never quite challenging for the top spot.

Peasedown St John v Temple Cloud 2nd XI, 14th May 2011

After the formalities performed by probably the oldest and youngest captains in the league Temple had first use of a soft wicket. Howie (81) and Rich App(45) were the main contributors to a total of 203-8, helped by a few dropped catches.

In reply Peasedown struggled, particularly against Polish (3-26), and then Luggy (4-24) chipped in with some 'entertaining' wickets. RSM Veater was heard to remark, "if he gets a 5-for and immortalisation on the board I'm not going to be a happy bunny" ... at which point Nathan dropped the catch that would have made it a 5-for!

Temple Cloud 2nd XI v Chilton Polden, 21st May 2011

Asked to bat by the visitors the early Temple batsmen seemed intent on running up a total in excess of 400. Unfortunately the high run rate was matched by a high rate of dismissals. Young Razor, first with Big Appy and then Jason, calmed things down a bit and then accelerated to push the score towards 200. Dan eventually missed one to be bowled for 94. Luggy smashed three 4s and Temple finished on 234.

Chilton were never in the hunt. Polish had one of those days and finished his twelve overs with 7 for 40.

Evercreech v Temple Cloud 2nd XI, 28th May 2011

Against an Evercreech side struggling for numbers Temple eventually came away with an easy victory. Some straight bowling and good catching - George Allwood in particular - limited the home side to 86. Polly was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 13 and Harry, in his first game for the 2nd XI, got 3 for 18.

Yet again Temple failed to build a substantial opening partnership but with a solid 37* from Young Appy the winning runs were obtained without too many alarms..

Temple Cloud 2nd XI v Banwell & Churchill, 4th June 2011

For the fourth game in a row RTP lost the toss and was somewhat surprised when Temple were asked to bat on a typical Stowey Road wicket. Howie and Cat got things off to a steady start but only courtesy of a number of dropped catches. Cat had to retire with a damaged fetlock after one sprightly run too many. Young Odd (56) kept the momentum going as did everyone who got to the wicket. Young Razor was top score with 63. A total of 234 was good but not impossible to chase.

Banwell set off in a very positive frame of mind and runs were coming at a decent rate. Fortune then favoured Temple when one of the Banwell batsmen played the ball down onto the ground where it bounced off his foot and back on to the wicket. The bowlers continued to bowl straight and were backed up with solid ground fielding. Luggy sweeping down by the nets must have saved 30 runs. Polly with 1 for 35 off his twelve overs provided the brake that pushed up the asking rate and the final part of the Banwell innings saw the run rate climb above 6/over and then higher still. Jason (3 for 49) picked up a couple of late wickets as Banwell finished around 30 short.

Temple Cloud 2nd XI v Spaxton, 11th June 2011

Temple got off to the best of starts when Polish bowled the Spaxton opener first ball. Polish continued to bowl well and finished his spell with 3 for 21 off 12 overs. Nathan was having an off day so Howie drifted up a few swingers; caught Campbell (in the outfield) bowled Wilton doesn't appear on many scorecards. Polly with two and Dan with 4 for 38 off 9 were the other wicket takers as Spaxton were all out for 160.

160 at Stowey Road should not be defendable but the Temple batsmen got bogged down and then out when trying to up the run rate. The first wicket was a run out mix-up with Cat and Howie (25). Two wickets fell with the score on 48 and then a fourth with the score on 56. Big Appy (15) and Jason pushed the score up to 88 and then a flurry of wickets saw Temple at 98 for 8. Brody (19) then played the most fluent innings of the day and with RTP edged the score up to 124 and a further 11 were added for the last wicket.

This was a poor batting performance - let's hope it is only one of the season.

Temple Cloud 2nd XI v All Saints, 25th June 2011

Skipper RTP won the toss for the first time this season and had no hesitiation in batting. Temple progressed slowly for the first 15 overs scoring only 39. The next 15 saw a marked increase in run rate with a further 108 being added. Rich (40), Young Odd (61) and Odd Senior (50) all contributed. Thereafter the run rate dropped a little and a few wickets fell and Temple were perhaps 20 short when the innings finished on 222 for 6.

The third over of the All Saints' innings probably decided the match when Polish (12-4-27-3) removed two batsmen, both bowled. Just 18 runs off the first 15 overs and then 61 after 25 left the batting side a lot to do with the asking rate around eight an over. Temple tried a variety of bowlers but could not get wickets and the game pettered out with All Saints on 156.

Wembdon v Temple Cloud 2nd XI, 2ndJuly 2011

RTP lost the toss again (1 out of 7) and in hot, sultry conditions Temple were asked to bat first on the astro wicket Wembdon are using this year. With Cat and Howie unavailable Rich and RTP got the innings off to a reasonable start with 30 in the first ten overs. RTP was the first to go gloving one to the keeper. Temple batsmen came and went and although six of the first seven passed 12 none could go on and make a substantial score. Polish (33*) was top score. On a very large ground with a slowish outfield 191 was at least defendable.

The Wembdon innings, like Temple's, had no real fluency until the number 4 bat came in. He immediately hit a couple of crisp boundaries and generally looked more comfortable than anyone else on either side. The turning point of the game was when he was dropped at mid-on off a hard hit drive, and though balls went in the air and half chances came and went nothing stuck. Temple chipped away at the other end but couldn't shift batsmen quickly enough, especially the Wembdon skipper who played second fiddle to the number 4 and then saw the team home once he was out for 80. Perky (4-45) bowled fast and aggresively but no-one else could find enough to really trouble the batsmen.

Temple finish the first half of the season in second place but need to win more of the tight games to really challenge for promotion.

Temple Cloud 2nd XI v Peasedown St. John, 16th July 2011

Temple's covers saved this game from the rain and in spite of the occasional flurry of light drizzle the match started more or less on time. Winning the toss Peasedown elected to bat. Nathan put an immediate spanner in the works by removing one of the openers. There was a further wicket for Nathan and one for Jason. The introduction of Polly and Rich really started the wickets falling. Polly (4-14) offered nothing that could be hit while Rich was getting considerable movement resulting in some wide balls but also some unplayable ones. Young Matt Locke made 30 as PSJ were all out for 103 in 30 overs.

Howie (39*) and Bellie (48*), back after injury, saw Temple home in just 17 overs.

Thatchers was being drunk by 5:30.

Chilton Polden v Temple Cloud 2nd XI, 23rd July 2011

RTP won his second toss of the season and invited Chilton to bat first on a wicket that was a little soft after the damp week. This looked to be a poor decision as Polish could not find the right line and Perky the right length. Chilton were bowling along a five an over. Polly put an immediate break on things taking the first wicket in the 11th over and after that Temple progressively strangled the innings. Polish found the right spot to put the ball. Nathan carried on once Polish had finished his spell and towards the end Perky, bowling a fuller length, was too quick for the Chilton tail. The wickets were shared round between the four bowlers. The Chilton total of 164 was way less than it migh have been but nevertheless challenging on a wicket that offered the bowlers something.

Howie and Rich got the innings off to a reasonable start before both were out LBW ... which is becoming something of a habit for Howie. George biffed the ball about for a bright 36 and then Dan Raisbeck sealed the victory with a hard-hit 54 well supported by Cat. What could have been a banana-skin of a target was reached with wickets and overs to spare.

Temple Cloud 2nd XI v Evercreech, 30th July 2011

Evercreech opted to bat first on a typically flat Temple track. The innings never developed any real momentum and once a stubborn 2nd wicket stand had been broken, with Appy taking a flying catch, the Temple bowlers were always on top. Polly finished with a very cheap '5 for' on his wedding anniversary and Nathan picked up four.

The Temple response was a stuttering affair with batsmen getting a few then getting out. Only Big Appy with 32 made any substantial contribution. At 66 - 6 things were not looking too rosy and Evercreech were certainly in with a shout. Nathan and RTP added another 15 or so before one of the Evercreech bowlers got the 'yips' and conceeded 22 runs in one over with only 8 off the bat. After that Will stroked an couple of fours as Temple rather ingloriously crept over the winning line.

Banwell & Chruchill v Temple Cloud 2nd XI, 6th August 2011

With both teams suffering from holiday absenses this was always going to be an interesting clash. RTP won the toss and inserted Banwell on a wicket that looked as if it might help the bowlers. The third ball of the day was pushed into the covers where Steve Curtis dived to stop it and managed to rip his hamstring! A few overs later Polly dived to stop the ball and dislocated the little finger on his right hand!

While all this was going on M Biggs was being severe on anything driveable and keeping the runs flowing. Polish was getting a bit of movement away from the bat and a thick outside edge from Biggs was caught by Polly, fingers strapped together, to remove the B&C danger man. There followed a period of attritional cricket wih Harry, Polish, Nathan and Polly bowling tightly back by some spirited out cricket. M Adams held the remainder of the B&C innings together playing very sensibly and finishing with a hard earned fifty.

The Temple reply was entrusted to Alex and Rich who scored steadily if a little slowly. Alex was first to go for 34 trying to up the pace, falling to a spectacular slip catch. Rich (54) and Big Appy (26) got Temple to within a sniff of victory with only one wicket down and then wickets started to tumble. Five wickets fell for the addition of very few runs and suddenly it was game on. There were a couple of dodgy moments before, for the second week running, a couple of well timed drives from Will saw Temple to victory.

This win lifted Temple to the top of the division with four matches to play.

Spaxton v Temple Cloud 2nd XI, 13th August 2011

After a poor batting performance against Spaxton in the fixture at Stowey Road Temple had something to prove in the return match. Howie and Alex got the innings underway and while Meadows had to be treated with respect runs were available at the other end. The first change of bowling saw Howie deflect the ball back onto the off stump to give Spaxton their first wicket. Rich and Alex then put on over 90 for the second wicket before Alex (43) was caught in the deep. Tom Hayden (44) then joined Rich and a further 103 was added for the third wicket before Rich was out for a well biffed 100 including two successive sixes both helped over the long on boundary by the same fielder! Cat (15*) with a massive 6 into the next field and a 5 helped push the final score up to 262 for 4.

The Spaxton response was ticking along nicely until Tom hung on to a storming catch in the covers to break the opening partnership; the batsman could hardly believe the ball was not bouncing down the car park at a rate of knots. That brought Scott Bellinger to the wicket and while he was present Spaxton were in with a shout. Polly (12-2-20-3) replaced Polish and was bowling a tight line and keeping one end under control. In his penultimate over there were three successive appeals for LBW with the umpire raising the finger for the third; Bellinger was gone and Spaxton were now on the back foot. Nathan and Polish swapped ends and were much more successful and Harry, with the help of two good catches from Nathan, also claimed wickets. The Spaxton innings ended on 181 for 9.

Temple Cloud 2nd XI v Winscombe, 20th August 2011

Temple batted first and Howie (47) and Alex (62) made steady progress against a selection of Winscombe bowlers. The 100 came up without loss in the 20th over and a substantial total looked on the cards. Rich (39) and Cat (38*) continued the good work but the Temple batsmen were finding Elvins difficult to get away and apart from a couple of overs towards the close of the innings the run rate was held in check. The Temple innings was concluded at 226 for 5, perhaps some 20 or 30 short of what looked possible after 20 overs.

Winscombe started slowly against the accuracy of Polish and the variety of Luggy. Luggy claimed a couple of wickets, both caught, as the batsmen tried to reach the short road-side boundary. A run out then reduced Winscombe to 37 for 3 off 14 overs putting Temple in the driving seat. However that brought Bawden and Vowles together. Both hit powerfully and rode their luck to see Winscombe home without the loss of any further wickets.

All Saints v Temple Cloud 2nd XI, 27th August 2011

The long trip to the Somerset/Devon border was undertaken on a day with the threat of rain in the air. The weather at All Saints had not been as bad as elsewhere and the wicket, though damp, was perfectly playable. RTP called correctly for the third week in a row and promptly inserted the home side. None of the All Saints’ batsmen could master the Temple bowling and Polish (12-3-19-2), Nathan (12-2-20-3), Polly (8-6-10-0) and Rich (7.1-4-9-4) bundled them out for 60; apparently the first time All Saints had been all out this season although one batsman was absent having ricked his back and gone off to hospital.

The runs were knocked off with the loss of three wickets without too many alarms.

This result plus results elsewhere lifted Temple to an unassailable position at the top of the division.

Temple Cloud 2nd XI v Wembdon Wyverns, 3rd September 2011

RTP won the toss yet again and Temple had first use of aTemple track that was very flat if not quite as hard some have been. There was some help for the bowlers early on with the ball moving about a bit. Luckily for Temple the Wembdon fielders were not helping in quite the same way and a number of catches were dropped. This helped Alex and Howie put on 85 for the first wicket before Howie (30) was bowled. Rich and Alex continue to push the score along before Alex as out for 58 caught trying to clear the infield. Tom with one six over extra cover kept the scoreboard ticking. Rich was out for 63 and then Jason pitched in with a quick 36 as 54 runs came off the last four overs. Temple had 252 to defend.

Wembdon lost two quick wickets, one each to Jason and Nathan, before Morrish and Goss put together a substantial stand that saw Wembon reach 128 for 2 in the 26th over. Tom Haydon, having his first bowl of the season, then bowled both batsmen for a personal cost of 16 runs. From 140 for 4 the Wembdon innings subsided to 179 all out with Jason coming back for a second spell and picking up his second '5 for' of the season.

Temple ended the season with a win that pushed them well clear at the top of the division. Jason was the leading wicket taker and Rich scored the most runs but in the main this has been a team effort with lots of people chipping in with runs and wickets, or saving runs and taking catches to support the bowlers. Well done everyone.
